Evaluation and Analysis of your front page

When creating my College Magazine I took certain things into consideration. For example the Language used. I tried to use catchy, uncomplicated, young language to create a fun vibe. This is shown by the word 'Freshers' printed largely. Freshers is a large party and chances are the reader of the magazine is interested in what happened, this is one of the main features. Gap years and trends is also an important part of teenagers life and these are all registered in my magazine. I tried to cut down my short explanation of the story line because it makes it a lot easier for the reader to see whats in the magazine before they buy the magazine.

My colour scheme is pink, purple and black and this is due to the facts my model (Daisy) has a pink and purple folder. Then they all tie in together and create one piece that is co-ordinated together and creates this issues co-operate colours. The main 3 that are featured throughout this magazine. It's a fun bright selection that compliment the whole production well. Another main thing in this magazine is the font I chose this font because it looks young, fun and creates a great vibe from the magazine that it'll be fun and cool but academic and school-orientated at the same time.

The reason I chose my picture is because it's relatable and the model is of the age of the magazines target audience. It is of a good framing, a good quality and fits the medium close-up requirement. The model looks happy and like this is a good academic student(the props used i.e. folders, helps to portray this).
Other pictures I chose we-re not as suitable for example...
This picture here is unsuitable due to the framing and the proportions of the model. I.e. her arm looks rather large due to the angle of the camera and the framing.

Then this one here(see right) isn't as good because of the busy background and the text over it would be too complicated and make it hard to read and see the cover lines placed. Plus the models face looks shiny and she already looks 'too edited'. Which is not the morals of this magazine.

The reason I chose the name 'College Life' is because it addresses easily what the magazine is about and it isn't too long for example 'The Wyke Way' would be very long and not as easy to read in a hurry. College Life is grown up, sophisticated and straight to the point of what the product actually is. Plus I didn't want to aim for the magazine to be subject specific. I aimed for it to be a varied magazine with stories from everything. I.e. fashion, college work and some sports news too.

This task has strongly increased my Photoshop skills, that was the photo manipulation programme I used. I changed my contrasts and saturation in the picture to make it a more brighter, happy image. Also I slightly airbrushed the model to make her look awake and not as tired as she originally looked. I also made her hair lighter and toned down the stripes on her top so they didn't look too distracting to the audience.

If I would have done this exercise again I wouldn't of made many changes just a few slight tweeks to the images. I would of made my model wear a more muted top and also made her look more happy and enjoyed to be at school. I would of also chosen a less 'shouty' bold font. However taking everything into consideration I am happy with my efforts and I look forward to the next task.

Digital Mock-Up of Front Cover

This was my digital mock up for a front cover.

College Magazine Name and Type Style

When creating the magazine cover one of the main conventions that you must include is the name of the magazine and the typestyle. I spent some time thinking of some name idea's and exploring some existing fonts and styles that we're available for me to use.

My favourite name was 'Wyke Weekly' or 'Your Wyke', I think the chosen name will be 'Wyke Weekly' due to it's short and snappy name. This is also an easy name that can be easily associated with the institution which will be Wyke College.
My favoured typestyle is 'Chalkduster' located in the top-left and 'Abadi MT Condensed Extra Bold' which is just below that. I will probably chose one similar to them.

Existing Products

When collecting research for my design for the magazine I decided to look at some magazine covers that have already been published. These magazines have the same target audience as my magazine will do too. This is the 15-19 age bracket. The covers I carefully selected were a mixture of Music, Fashion and then a select few Student magazines too.

Then also along with this, I carefully selected two other images and then analysed them. This is the finished analysis;

Then, I collected another selection of pictures that would be a suitable picture for my main image, for example the picture on the front cover behind the cover lines and mast head.

Conventions and LIIAR Analysis of 3 Magazine Covers

The first thing I did before any LIIAR analysis was to complete an analysis of the key elements of a magazine cover. They are called Conventions...

Then I began my LIIAR Analysis;

This magazine is dedicated to teenagers as it is called Seventeen Magazine. It is dedicated to teenage girls and their likes and what they're interested in.  All the language used will be easy to read as the audience of this magazine will be for the younger generation. Typically this magazine will appeal to girls. This is because of the colour scheme used. Yellow, blue, green and coral  are feminine colours and typically what a young girl would prefer to see and they would find 'appealing'.
The institution that creates this magazine is Seventeen magazine and it is typically American. The model here is model, actress and general socialite. She looks summery and pretty and this maybe a look that a typical teenager would like to re-create for a party or a summer event.
 This magazine is

This magazine is typically made for males that are a 'fan' of Entrepreneur. It is a magazine that specifies in stories of a business genre. It's target market is for the older male or middle aged male that enjoys this type of media. Story lines such as 'Young Millionaires' will seem interesting to them and make them want to read the magazine. The model is a prime example of the target market he looks like he is wearing a suit and like a representable male. The ideology will be entertainment but then also it could be for educational purposes. It also has mature colours like grey and white but then a light green that lightens the mood but makes it look masculine too.
